Elopement Photography at Monserrate: What to Know Before Choosing This Setting

M&C’s photographs capture two distinct sides of Monserrate: the chapel ruins, surrounded by greenery, and the architecture of the palace. Within the same park, these settings offer different backdrops for an elopement photography session.

For couples planning an elopement in Sintra, photographs like these can inspire a choice. They also raise practical questions. How do you reach these locations? What shoes should you bring? Can you comfortably walk in a wedding dress with a train? And what happens if the park closes on your chosen date? These details deserve a place in your planning.

Arriving at Monserrate and walking through the park

A photography session at Monserrate involves walking between locations. Arriving at the park entrance and reaching the spot where your photographs begin are separate parts of the schedule.

Allow time for the route, changes in level and any pauses along the way, particularly if you would like photographs both beside the palace and at the ruins. A comfortable schedule gives you time to walk, look after your outfits and enjoy your surroundings.

If either of you has mobility requirements, share these early in the planning process. The route and photography locations should suit the people taking part.

What shoes should you bring?

We recommend bringing comfortable shoes with a good grip for walking through the park. Choose a pair you have already worn.

If you would like to wear heels in your photographs, bring them separately and change at the selected locations. Narrow heels require particular care on uneven ground and can catch or sink into softer surfaces.

The same consideration applies to your partner’s footwear. Smooth soles or brand-new formal shoes can make walking less comfortable. Suitable footwear gives you greater freedom to enjoy the experience.

What should you consider when choosing your wedding dress?

Your dress should reflect your personal style. For a session in this setting, it is also useful to consider how easily you can move in it.

Can you take a full step? Step up comfortably? Lift the skirt yourself? Walk for a while without the weight becoming uncomfortable?

Lighter fabrics and skirts that are easy to gather can make moving between locations simpler. A fuller dress or a long train can also work, provided you allow time and arrange help to carry and position it.

Expect that the hem may come into contact with soil, leaves or damp surfaces. Knowing this beforehand helps you make a choice you feel comfortable with.

What should you bring to the session?

Water, a light layer and your walking shoes are useful essentials. Keep personal belongings to a minimum and agree on who will carry them while you are being photographed.

If your outfit includes a long train or veil, or you are carrying a bouquet, consider what help you might need along the route. Small practical arrangements can make the experience much more comfortable.

Monserrate is a monument open to visitors

Monserrate Park and Palace is managed by Parques de Sintra. Photography sessions must respect other visitors, authorised routes and instructions from the monument’s staff.

Sessions are subject to specific conditions, which should be checked in advance. A standard admission ticket should not be treated as automatic permission for every type of photography session or use of the resulting images. Parques de Sintra’s published conditions also state that these sessions cannot take place on an exclusive basis during public opening hours.

Having photographs taken at the ruins does not mean the space is reserved for a ceremony. These are separate arrangements, and their respective conditions need to be confirmed.

Could the park close on your chosen date?

Yes. Parques de Sintra advises that monuments under its management may occasionally close for state events, restrictions on access to the Sintra hills due to wildfire danger, extreme weather or other exceptional circumstances.

For this reason, plans involving Monserrate should include a suitable alternative. Access conditions need to be checked during the planning process and again close to the date.

If the authorities or the management require the park to close, the photography plans will need to change. Preparing for this possibility allows decisions to be made calmly while protecting the time set aside for your celebration.

What about the restoration work at the palace?

Restoration work was taking place at the palace when M&C’s session took place. Although it is not visible in the photographs we have published, it formed part of the conditions on the day.

A collection of photographs shows selected views. Planning another session also requires an understanding of the monument’s current condition and which areas will be accessible.

At the time of writing, Parques de Sintra lists roof restoration work involving scaffolding and a temporary protective covering, scheduled to continue until the first quarter of 2027. The position should be checked again for the date of each session.

Planning the experience behind the photographs

M&C’s images show what these settings can offer. Every couple will bring their own pace, preferences and practical needs.

At Elope in Portugal, planning includes these details: coordinating routes with the photography team, allowing time to walk, checking the conditions of use and preparing alternatives.
